VVPAT will be used in Bijepur assembly bypoll: Odisha CEO

BHUBANESWAR: Chief Electoral Officer, Odisha, DN Gupta today said VVPAT (Voter-verified Paper Audit Trail) machine will be used along with EVMs during the by-election in Bijepur assembly segment in Bargarh district.

Gupta said all booths in Bijepur assembly segment, will have VVPATs, which will release paper slips for the voters. That will act as a receipt and confirm the symbol they have voted for.

Stating that the move will meet any doubts or speculations related to EVM tampering or manipulation, Gupta said though VVPAT was used in Odisha on pilot basis, this time it would be available in all the booths of Bijepur assembly segment.

Replying a question, Gupta said the bypoll in Bijepur segment would be announced after getting clearance from the Orissa High Court.

The by-election at Bijepur is required due to death of its sitting MLA Subal Sahu of Congress in August.
