BERHAMPUR: Incessant rains since Saturday caused extensive damage in Ganjam district. While urban areas, including Berhampur city, are reeling under waterlogging woes, communication to several villages has been disrupted.

Following the rains, hundreds of acres of cultivable land in Aska, Kabisuryanagar, Kodola, Polosara and Bhanjanagar have been submerged.Sources said water is flowing over the bridge on Baghua river between Kabisuryanagar and Budhamba. Similarly, the rains have washed away a temporary bridge over Badanadi river near Sorismuli. The bridge served as the shortest route from Bhanjanagar to several villages and parts of Kandhamal district.

This apart, the downpour uprooted trees along the main roads in Kodola and Polosara blocks, thereby disrupting traffic. The rain water also entered houses in several villages in the two blocks.Though there was a respite from the showers on Sunday afternoon, panic continues to grip people following heavy rain forecast during the next two days. The district administration has directed officials to assess the loss and remain alert. The uprooted trees have been removed from roads.
