Man gets ten years' rigorous imprisonment for raping mentally-challenged woman

The verdict was pronounced basing on the evidences, witness testimonies and arguments presented by both the prosecution and the defence.

BERHAMPUR: A local court in Rayagada on Saturday sentenced a 29-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping and attempting to murder a mentally-challenged woman in 2024.

The convict is Babula Kulishika. Additional district and sessions judge Alpana Swain also imposed fine of Rs 4 lakh on Kulishika, further directing him to undergo additional imprisonment as per law if he failed to pay the sum.

The verdict was pronounced basing on the evidences, witness testimonies and arguments presented by both the prosecution and the defence.

According to the prosecution, the incident had taken place on October 31, 2024, under the jurisdiction of Chandili police station in Rayagada district. Kulishika had abducted the survivor, then aged around 34 years, from the residence of her brother following which he sexually assaulted her and later attempted to kill her to destroy evidence.

Later, basing on the complaint of her relative, police registered a case on November 5, 2024, and began investigation. Kulishika was subsequently arrested.
