CHENNAI: Mudaliars should be listed in the most backward community (MBC) category in Tamil Nadu, Anaithu Mudaliar Vellalar Munnetra Peravai, led by former MP, A C Shanmugam, demanded.

Addressing a gathering on Sunday, Shanmugam said Mudaliars, Vellalars, Sengunthars and Senaithalaivars must be included in the most backward category as a vast majority of the people were disadvantaged.

He said: “The community appeals to Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to give us separate reservation in education and job opportunities,” and added the Tamil Nadu Government should organise a world Tamil conference to commemorate the centenary celebrations of former Chief Minister C N Annadurai.

A life-size statue of freedom-fighter V O Chidambaranar should be erected on the Parliament premises. Union Government must intervene in the Sri Lankan crisis to end the sufferings of the Tamil people, the former MP said.

Awards were given to 18 prominent persons belonging to the Mudaliar and Vellalar communities from various walks of life including actor Prashanth, Chandrayan Project Director Mayilsami Annadurai, film director R K Selvamani and former Vice- Chancellor, Tamil University, Avvai Natarajan.

A rally was also held to seek quota for the community. Former Chief Justice, Gujarat High Court, Gokulakrishnan, and others participated.

‘GIVE QUOTA FOR BRAHMINS TOO’: Addressing the meeting, AIADMK MLA and actor, S Ve Shekar, said reservation must be given to castes based on their population.

MBC quota must be given to Mudaliars and Vellalars, he added.

A federation of South Indian Brahmins had been floated to fight for quota to disadvantaged Brahmins, he added.
