SALEM: A rectangular stone believed to be of the megalithic period was found in Karadiyur, a tribal village in Yercaud, on Sunday. The stone was six feet long, four feet wide and four inches thick.
The villagers who spotted the stone near an old temple adjoining the forest informed revenue inspector (RI) Ponnusamy. The RI visited the village and made arrangements to officially handover the stone to the revenue department. The exact nature of the stone is yet to be ascertained though it is believed that ancient tribal must have used it for worship.
Earlier, ancient cairns and pottery were found in some remote tribal villages, including Karadiyur and Kovilur in the Sheveroyan range of hills. This had given credence to the claims of some historical researchers that hills in the region, including Dharmapuri, were once inhabited by humans of the megalithic age. The archaeology department has been intimated about the find.
