CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa on  Monday named P  Munusamy and Amman T  Narayanan as the party’s candidates for the bypolls in Vandavasi (SC) and Tiruchendur assembly constituencies, which will be held on December 19. Both the candidates would battle it out with the DMK candidates to be announced.

Munusamy is party’s Vandavasi town MGR Mandrum treasurer  while Narayanan Udangudi area unit secretary.

Actor politician Vijayakanth’s DMDK has decided to go it alone in the election and the party candidates would be announced in a day or two.

The Left parties CPM and CPI, who had electoral adjustments with the AIADMK in the Lok Sabha polls in May, but contested the five bypolls, are unlikely to contest the bypolls. But a decision on the Left’s support would be known after Wednesday.

It may be recalled that the AIADMK had boycotted the bypolls to the five assembly constituencies in August to “express party’s protest against the irregularities,” the use money and muscle power by the ruling DMK. She had said that the bypolls would not be free and fair.

The Opposition leader had told reporters last that her party would contest the forthcoming bypolls and her party had not called for permanent boycott.

The by-elections were caused following the death of DMK legislator  S C Jayaraman representing Vandavasi and the resignation of Tiruchendur legislator Anitha Radhakrishnan, who joined DMK.
