ERODE: Since the introduction of Kalaignar Veedu Vazhangum Thittam (KVVT), lesser clamour has been witnessed for the Indira Aawas Yojana (IAY).

Sources said that the BPL list of each panchayat is the criterion used to determine how many houses must be constructed under the IAY for the hutdwellers owning pattas. If the beneficiary is not able to spend some amount on his own, the next in the list can be selected under the scheme.

While the Centre has fixed Rs 3,6000 as unit cost for a house under IAY, the State gives Rs 39,000 for a house worth Rs 75,000.

The subsidy was increased this year due to the introduction of KVVT in which also the unit cost of the house is the same. However, as the amount is not sufficient, only beneficiaries who are able to spend an additional Rs 10,000 opt for IAY. Though 3,014 houses are planned under IAY this year, the number of applicants is far less till date.
