CHENNAI: In a surprise move, AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa removed MLA PK  Sekar Babu, from the post of the secretary of the party’s north Chennai district unit, which reportedly led to the death of a party associate on Monday.

In a letter to Jayalalithaa, the wife of the deceased functionary, Mariyal said that Gandhinagar A Selvakumar suffered a heart attack on hearing the news of Babu’s removal. Selvakumar was the Villivakkam area’s 55th division secretary.  Babu, nurtured by AIADMK presidium chairman E Madhusudhanan, has been holding the post for over 12 years. Former Law Minister D Jayakumar will now be the new secretary. However, Jayakumar has been relieved from the posts that he held earlier - secretary of the MGR Mandram as well as in-charge of the districts Tiruchi town and sub-urban and Perambalur.   Vaigai Selvan, secretary of the literary wing, will take care of the three districts instead.

These decisions were taken after Jayalalithaa discussed the issue with senior party functionaries, including O Panneerselvam, Nainar Nagenthran and others.  Sources said there have been complaints against Babu from district functionaries. Sekar Babu told Express,“Whatever responsibilities are entrusted by Amma, I will do it all by heart.”
