CHENNAI: Former Vice-Chancellor of Dr MGR Medical University and former Special Representative of Tamil Nadu government in New Delhi, Dr B P Rajan died of heart attack at his Gandhi Nagar Residence around 4.45 am on Tuesday.

He was 79. He is survived by his wife Shantha Rajan, son Dr Gunasekaran and daughter Dr Archana.

Dr Rajan, Founder, Director of Rajan Dental Institute, was unwell for sometime and underwent treatment at Apollo Hospitals here.

Dr Rajan, who began his practice in his village, rose to become the Vice-Chancellor of Dr MGR Medical University and the President of the Dental Council of India. He was also President of Indian Dental Association and served as Principal of Government Dental College.

Expressing grief, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said Dr Rajan had been her family friend for the past 36 years.

Dr Rajan, when served as Vice-Chancellor of Dr MGR Medical University, had introduced a number of innovative measures to benefit the medical students.

After creating an awareness on dental health, he had helped the poor to get access to dental health, she said.
