Lankans go back call gets louder

Outrage over SL airmen being trained at Tambaram IAF base

Express News Service

Soon after the statement of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa demanding the expulsion of Lankan Air Force personnel who were undergoing training at Tambaram Air Force Station here, leaders of various political parties including DMK president M Karunanidhi, DMDK chief Vijayakant, TNCC president BS Gnanadesikan, MDMK general secretary Vaiko and others echoed the demand made by the Chief Minister.

In a similar incident in February 2009, eight Lankan Air Force personnel who came to undergo training at Tambaram air base were sent back to Lanka following the intervention of then CM M Karunanidhi.

That incident assumed significance as it happened at a time when there were charges that India was providing training and arms supply to the Lankan army to fight the LTTE when large number of Tamils were being killed in Lanka.

Meanwhile, members of MDMK and Naam Thamizhar  staged a protest in front of the Air Force Station, Tambaram on Thursday afternoon.

Police said a total 103 members of both the parties were arrested and released later in the day.
