Hymns to be played along Girivalam path

Hymns from Thiruvasagam and Devaram will soon fill the air along the Girivalam path to create a transcendental mood among the devotees who visit the temple town.

The administration of Sri Arunachaleswarar temple has begun a project to install speakers at 200 spots along 11 km of the 14-km Girivalam path. The project has been taken up  at a cost of `25 lakh.

Hymns and mantra will be played on the speakers during festival seasons and full moon day, when devotees go around the Annamalai Hills, believed to the physical form of Lord Shiva.

“We have completed the installation of 10- metre high poles on either sides of the Girivalam path, as well as cabling and wiring work. Speakers will soon be fixed. The temple fund will be utilised for the scheme,” joint commissioner and executive officer of Sri Arunachaleswarar Temple, A T Paranjothi, said. The speakers would be connected to the Ashta Lingam temples. “The hymns will be chanted around the clock during the festival season and full moon days. On other days, mantras will be chanted from dawn-to-dusk,” he said.

The temple administration would take up the installation of speakers in the remaining three-km stretch of the Girivalam path in second phase of the project.

Paranjothi said reflecting sign boards displaying significant verses from Devaram and Thiruvasagam will also be installed. “The sign board will be installed on either side of the Girivalam path at a cost of `10 lakh. The work will be completed well before the beginning of the Karthigai Maha Deepam festival,” he noted.
