Expert team inspects cracker units

A three-member expert committee of the CSIR has examined the fireworks industries in the district.

The team was led by M Suryanarayanan, Chemical Engineering Division, Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai, met  Virudhunagar District Collector T N Hariharan before inspecting the fireworks units.

S Muthukrishnan, Senior Principal Scientist, Central Electrochemical Research Institute, Karaikudi, were among the team members, sources said.

The team has collected first hand information on the accidents in fireworks units in the recent years. It will suggest specific involvement of CSIR laboratories for providing scientific intervention to the cracker units.  The team also studied  suitable safety measures during the cracker manufacturing after the inspection. The team mainly visited the mixing areas of the fireworks units, where various chemicals are being mixed to get the desired explosive material. The mixing units are the place where most of the accidents take place. The team inspected two fireworks units each in Melamathur and Arumugapatti, near Virudhunagar, and Sivakasi.
