Attack not spontaneous, say Dalits

For Angalamma, it was perhaps the worst moment of her life as her burnt hut on Kattayan Street in Marakkanam Colony stood testimony to the mindless mob violence on Thursday evening. Her daughter Anusuya’s marriage was scheduled for May 25, for which she had bought 10 sovereigns of jewellery and some utensils and saris. All of them were charred along with her dream of having a ‘grand’ wedding.

Angalamma’s house was one among the seven tenements in the colony that were burnt down allegedly by PMK activists who were in the area. Four other houses were also torched in another colony.

Narayanasamy, whose house was also charred completely, said he saw 50 to 60 people running towards his house and shouting “get rid of these …”. Narayanasamy, who fled along with his wife saw his house engulfed in flames within no time.

One of the residents said the culprits even took the pictures after burning down the houses and hurled abuses at the women showing obscene gestures.

The local residents suspected that the attack could have been an act of revenge for the violence that took place in 2002.

Meanwhile, VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan visited the area and consoled the victims. He blamed the PMK activists for the inciting the violence.
