11 TN colleges get the right to confer degrees

Three colleges in Tiruchy and another at Mayiladuthurai in Nagapattinam district have been provided the status of degree conferring colleges by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD)

Three colleges in Tiruchy and another at Mayiladuthurai in Nagapattinam district have been provided the status of degree conferring colleges by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) on the basis of  autonomous status, ‘A Grade’ accorded by NAAC and college with potential for excellence.

The colleges are St Joseph’s College, National College and Jamal Mohamed College all from Tiruchy and AVC College in Myiladuthurai. Altogether 45 colleges across the country are given the status.

Among them 11 are from Tamil Nadu with Tiruchy having a lion’s share of three, as the city continues to be an educational hub in the State.

Loyola College, Chennai, Kongunadu Arts and Science College and PSGR Krishnammal College for Women in Coimbatore, Vellalar College for Women, Erode, Standard Fire Works Rajaratnam College for Women, Sivakasi, Fathima College, Madurai and St Xavier’s College, Palayamkottai were the other colleges which were accorded the status. 

The concerned college principals attended a meeting on October 7, in Delhi convened by Ministry of Human Resource Development  and they were briefed about the status, sources from the concerned colleges said and expressed their happiness.

The selected colleges would get `55 crore each for the development of basic infrastructure facilities at their respective campus for a span of three years.

Hereafter,the colleges would confer the degrees with their own emblem.
