In a shocking incident in broad day light at a crowded area in Madurai, a masked man robbed Rs 10.60 lakhs from the Corporation Bank at knife point on Monday evening.
After he left from the spot after executing the robbery in eight minutes, the bankers called for help. The incident occurred at the Corporation Bank in Kulamangalam.
The bank’s assistant manager Tirunvukkarasu told police that the robber placed a sharp knife on the throat of woman cashier Banumathi (55) and drove all the ten staff to the manager’s room.
“He called me and asked me to put the cash into his shoulder bag. He did not remove the knife from the woman cashier’s throat till he absconded with the cash,” he told the police.
The south zone IG Abhay Kumar Singh told reporters that there were many doubts in the incident. “The bankers said one single man managed all of them with a knife. The manager or any other employee did not press the burglary alarm buzzer which was in good working condition. The staff can scream for help through the window. If they shouted, anyone could have found the robber’s identity or could have caught him when he escaped in his two wheeler,” he said. “We are investigating various angles including the possible hand of insiders in the robbery,” he added.
Banumathi told police that she was coming to the entrance of the bank to go home when the masked man wearing black pant and shirt with an artificial teeth in his mouth intercepted her.
