Members of Vellore District Co-operatives Bank Employees Coordination Committee held a protest in Vellore on Wednesday against the plan of closing down the Primary Agricultural Co-operative Credit Society (PACCS).

The protest, led by the committee’s district general secretary L Paranjothi, was held in front of the Central Co-operatives Bank in Vellore.

He said there was a plan to close down the PACCS that had been functioning in the interior villages for the benefit of farmers, and transfer all the accounts and funds to the Central Co-operatives Bank. This would affect the farmers as they would have to travel to the town to access their accounts.

There are 184 PACCS in the district and three employees work in each society. Closing down these societies would also affect the employees, he added.
