TN Likely to Lose 600 MBBS Seats

COIMBATORE:  Even as allotment for MBBS seats is underway, Medical Council of India (MCI) is still busy with approving/disapproving seats in medical colleges.

As per the list published by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday regarding medical colleges whose scheme for renewal of batches of MBBS for 2014-15 have been disapproved, Tamil Nadu is said to lose 600 seats.

The list includes four non-governmental medical colleges from Tamil Nadu such as Annapoorna Medical College Hospital, Salem; Chennai Medical College and Research Centre, Tiruchy; Tagore Medical College and Hospital, Chennai; and Madha Medical College and Hospital, Thandalam.

All the medical college had 150 seats each.

But as per a list presented by Union Health Minister in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, the State is said to lose 750 seats from five medical colleges, which may be the highest in the country.

The MCI has recommended for disapproval of renewal of permission for 45 colleges with 3,820 MBBS seats for the year 2014-15 as per the report presented by Union Minister.

Talking to Express, director of medical education, TN, said no government institutions have been denied approval for conducting MBBS for the 2014-15 year.
