COIMBATORE: With a view to allowing students have hassle-free mobility from one institution to another, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has come up with a fresh set of guidelines on adoption of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS).

The CBCS would be uniformly followed by universities across the country from 2015-16. Under the new system, the UGC has come up with a 10-point grading system to assess students.

UGC vice-chairman H Devaraj said, “The credit earned by a student in one institution would be transferred to another when he/she switches. For instance, a student from Delhi can join an institution in Chennai in the second year of their study, without having to waste one whole year.”

In a recent letter to the vice chancellors of universities across the country, UGC secretary Jaspal S Sandhu said, “Because of the diversity in evaluation system followed by different universities in India, students have suffered problems in acceptance of their credentials. In order to mitigate this, the CBCS should be adopted by all universities.”

“This would ensure seamless mobility of students across the higher education institutions in the country. The credits earned by the student can be transferred and would be of great value to the students in the event of their seeking migration,” he added.

To bring in the desired uniformity in grading system and method for computing the cumulative grade point average based on the performance of students, the UGC has formulated certain guidelines as well.
