VELLORE: The Prohibition and Enforcement Wing (PEW), Vaniyambadi, raided an illegal liquor  manufacturing process in a farmhouse in Vanniyapudur village on Wednesday.

Acting on a tip-off, police personnel led by Inspector Venkatachalam, raided the farmhouse of Krishnan at Vanniyapudur. “We received reliable information that a huge haul of liquor was stocked in Krishnan’s house around 3 pm on Wednesday.  We immediately conducted a raid,” said Inspector Venkatachalam.

They also found 136 cans of Rectified Spirit (RS) weighing 4,760 litres and 1,506 duplicated Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL)bottles labelled ‘Green Magic Brandy’. They also found more than 2,000 empty liquor bottles, labels of various liquor brands, bottle caps, machines for sealing the bottles and colouring agents in the house, said Inspector Venkatachalam.

The worth of the seized contraband is  estimated to be around Rs 15 lakhs according to  police sources.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that Krishnan and his mother Rani were in the business of manufacturing duplicate IMFL bottles and selling them by passing them off as the original. Rani is the sister of Maheswari, who is well known to the police having been detained under the Goondas Act a few years ago. The police launched a search for the trio in connection with the case and registered a case against the son and mother under the provisions of the Tamil Nadu Rectified Spirit Rules, 2000. Police said, they had also seized a total of 8,500 litres of rectified spirit, worth around Rs 21 lakh, from the house of Maheswari in Nethaji Nagar on the outskirts of Vaniyambadi on October 17.

The police had registered a case against Maheswari and her husband Srinivasan, who are at large.
