COIMBATORE: Four Coimbatoreans, who had been to Nigeria and had returned to their hometown recently, are under observation for Ebola, according to the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine here.

They were under observation along with two Nigerian nationals who had come to a private hospital in the city for a hand surgery.

Officials said the two Nigerians  had returned to their country after the completion of the surgery. Sources said 400 persons from Nigeria had been put under observation for signs of Ebola.

A senior official of Public Health and Preventive Medicine in Chennai told Express on Wednesday that the number of persons under observation till now was 432.

On Wednesday, the department exempted the names of six persons from the list as they had completed State monitoring for a period of 30 days.

Hence, the total number of persons under observation across the State was 426. However, none of the persons under monitoring were  reported to have symptoms of the virus attack.

The list was being updated every day based on information provided by Immigration sections and passenger information from the international airports in the country.

The official said the number of cases in African countries had come down in the last few days.

“In Tamil Nadu, the most number of people under observation are those from Nigeria or people who had visited that country. As of now, Nigeria has a few confirmed cases of Ebola. Still, the Tamil Nadu Health Department will continue its monitoring,” the official said.

The official added that screening at airports, especially international airports would be continued.
