Express News Service

PUDUCHERRY: Timely intervention by the police not only thwarted attempts by three persons from attacking a French bakery owner to elicit ‘mamool’ but also resulted in the arrest of two.

According to police, an unknown person rang up Shanmughasundaram, the proprietor of a bakery near the Indira Gandhi square, and demanded mamool from him. Shanmughasundaram informed the Reddiyarpalayam police, who hatched a plan to nab the culprits red handed.

Following the call, three persons reached a pre-decided spot and demanded cash. Just as Shanmughasundaram was about to hand over the cash the police rushed in. On seeing the police, the irate rowdies tried to escape after unsuccessfully trying to attack Shanmughasundaram. The police managed to nab two while another one fled the scene.

On learning that the bakery owner had brisk business, they decided to threaten him and extort money. Sources added that the three did not have any criminal antecedent. Further investigation is on.
