VELLORE: Gudiyattam municipality is taking steps to provide drinking water to all its citizens on a daily basis, said chairperson Amutha Sivaprakasam.
She said that additional water sources were being explored at the water works at Pasumathur village on the banks of the Palar river.
Amutha said that the water demand for the town was around 82 lakh litres per day but the water works at Pasumathur, which has 12 open wells, 11 deep bore wells and sources within the town, was able to supply just around 59 lakh litres per day. To meet the gap in demand and supply, the municipality has explored additional water sources in the village and efforts are being made to tap more water on a war-footing, she added.
Amutha, with the commissioner (in charge) Uma Maheswari and some councillors of the municipality, inspected the ongoing water projects in the town on Friday. Amutha appealed to the residents of the town to use water with a sense of austerity and advised that households should not tap water from the main pipelines using electric pumps, warning them that if not followed, they would attract legal action. On an additional note, she requested the residents to pay water and property taxes on time.
