Villupuram Retd HM, Ryot Held in Riots Case

Express News Service

VILLUPURAM: Two more caste Hindus, including a retired headmaster, were arrested on Wednesday for their alleged role in triggering the caste clash in Seshasamudram village, near here, last week.

The duo was hiding in a farm, when the police, based on a tip-off, carried out a search and apprehended them. They have been identified as Samikannu (67), the retired headmaster of a government school, and M Sadiyan (35), a farmer, both from the village, said a police official.

The clash between the caste Hindus and the Dalits erupted after the Dalits over the Mariamman temple vehicle procession in a caste Hindu locality on August 15.

Following the clash, police officials booked over 500 people. They arrested nearly 100 caste Hindus for hurling petrol bombs at the temple car, attacking the Dalits and pelting the policemen with stones when they went to bring the situation under control.

Police officials produced them at the Kallakurichi Magistrate Court and later remanded them in Cuddalore Central prison on Wednesday night.

It may be recalled that the clash left several policemen and village assistants injured.
