CHENNAI:At a time when the DMK is coming under heavy pressure from all sides with potential allies pitching hard for a share of the power pie, party president M Karunanidhi, in what appears to be a convergence of opinion on the issue, said no one can form a government leaving aside the DMK.

His remarks were in contrast to the assertive speech of party treasurer MK Stalin who declared that the DMK would form the government and eradicate liquor from the State.

Stalin also declared that Karunanidhi would be the next Chief Minister.  Speaking at the ‘Liquor Eradication Conference’ organised by the DMK’s women’s wing at Padappai near the city, Stalin said it was DMK which enacted a law to provide equal share to women in ancestral property. He asserted that DMK would come to power and enforce prohibition in the State.

Karunanidhi, in his address said, those who do not accept the word ‘Dravidian’ were using the word for selfish gains and carry that name in their party. The big gathering in the conference would be a warning to other parties, he added.

Expressing confidence that the DMK would form the government, he said “We have the right to form the government as we are the younger brothers of Anna and Periyar. We should not create differences among ourselves and get destroyed”.

Earlier, resolutions were passed asking the State government to enforce prohibition immediately and release all those who participated in anti-liquor protests throughout the State.
