THOOTHUKUDI:Four lecturers of a private engineering college near Thoothukudi were booked on Wednesday for allegedly instigating a girl student to attempt suicide.

According to sources, the four were identified as Hema, Padma, Mercy and Ashok. The girl, Rooth Saini, who jumped off the college building on Monday, sustained severe injuries on her back and below her hip. She also sustained fractures on her legs and was admitted to a private hospital here.

Meanwhile, her parents Terrin and Raveendran, along with students of the college, staged a protest in front of the Collectorate on Wednesday and demanded the arrest of those responsible for their daughter’s suicide bid.

Terrin alleged that the college management had told them not to file any complaint and even offered money. But the family declined it and went ahead and registered a complaint.

When enquired, the students claimed that the girl had indulged in copying during the exam and was caught red-handed. She was asked  to write an apology letter and get it signed from other lecturers, the students said. It was while obtaining the signatures that one of the lecturers scolded her very badly, forcing Rooth to take the extreme step, they claimed.
