3 of Family Die in Mishap, Baby Lives

Express News Service

VELLORE: Three members of a family were killed when a two-wheeler on which they were travelling hit the parapet of the railway over bridge (RoB) at Shenpakkam and fell on the railway track. Miraculously, an 18-month-old child survived the 50-foot fall with minor injuries as her mother had hugged her when they fell from the RoB.

The accident took place around 10 pm on Sunday when Selvam (35) of Unnai Mottur village near Anaicut was riding towards his native village, having his wife Vennila (31) and children - Sai Kumar (4) and Hasini (18 months) - as pillion riders. Police said Selvam was working as electrician in Chennai. The family was travelling from Chennai and Selvam apparently dozed off and rammed the wall. In the impact, all the four were thrown off the bike. Except for the baby, all the three died on the spot.

Passersby, on hearing the child’s cries and seeing the mangled bike, searched for the victims. On spotting the victims along the track, they alerted police and ambulance. Police rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies and  sent the child to the Government Vellore Medical Hospital. A case was registered in and enquiry is on.
