'Maoists May Target Railway Stations, Cops'

Express News Service

MADURAI:The State police recently sent out a special alert to its district units, including Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode and Madurai, cautioning that Maoists and Tamil Nadu Liberation Army (TNLA) groups may try to indulge in some subversive activities like planting bombs on railway tracks, at railway stations and may also target police stations. Hence, the police should mount vigil and beef up security at vital points in their respective districts, the alert said.

The State police, a few weeks ago, nabbed five Maoists, including Roopesh and his wife Shyna, Kannan, Anoop and Easwaran, at Karumathampatti in Coimbatore district.

In case of TNLA, the police had foiled their attempts by recovering high intensity explosive devices like pipe bomb from a leading supermarket in Madurai and also from near the house of former Union minister P Chidambaram in Sivaganga district. Similarly, a pipe bomb was recovered from near the house of another former Union minister V Narayanaswamy in Puducherry some months ago.

It is suspected that TNLA and Tamil nationalist groups may also plan similar attacks in northern and central parts of the State.
