DSP and Cops Get Jail Term for Document Forgery of Mishap

THANJAVUR:  Four police personnel, including a serving Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), were sentenced to one-year jail term by a court in Thiruvaiyaru on Tuesday, for forging documents in an accident case, in which the DSP was involved.

According to the prosecution, S Ravichandran, who was working as an Inspector at  Thanjavur west police station, was driving a car on Sengippatti Main Road in Thanjavur in July, 2003 when he fatally knocked down Sasikumar, a lorry cleaner. However, the case relating to the accident registered by Sengippatti police on July 11, 2003 did not mention Ravichandran as the driver of the car. Besides,  details of the vehicle involved in the accident was also changed.

Based on a complaint by the Oriental Insurance Company, the insurer, CB-CID police registered a case and filed chargesheet in Tiruvaiyaru Judicial Magistrate Court.

After hearing the counsels, S Somasundaram, Judicial Magistrate, on Tuesday sentenced Ravichandran, Devan and Ramalingam, who were working as Inspectors at Budalur police station, and Thangaraj, who was the sub-Inspector in Sengippatti, to one year in jail under sections 465 (forgery), 471 (using a forged document as genuine), read with section 34 (act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).

Based on the petitions by convicted persons, all the four were granted bail.

Of the four, Ravichandran was subsequently promoted as DSP and posted in Mannargudi.
