MADURAI: The HC Bench on Monday sought information from the Centre on what provision allowed the RBI to print Devanagari form of numerical in the Rs 2,000 note.

As the government’s standing counsel has requested time to get information from the higher officials, the court passed over the petition twice before adjourning it to Tuesday.

Petitioner ‘Agri’ K P T Ganesan said the Centre issued a notification on November 8 demonetizing Rs 500 and Rs 1000, and following which, RBI released Rs 2,000.

Apart from the international form of Indian numerical, it is printed in Devanagari form.

In the Official Languages Act enacted in 1963, there is no provision for the use of Devanagari form. Even before the Act, the President did not give nod for such utilisation, he said.

Without passing any law in Parliament, the Centre has printed the Devanagari form of numerical in the Rs 2000 denomination note. So it should be declared as invalid, he prayed.
