CHENNAI: Well-known sculptor S Nandagopal died of a massive cardiac arrest at his residence at Cholamandal Artists’ Village, Injambakkam. He was 71. He is survived by his wife Kala Nandagopal and daughter Pallavi Nandagopal.
He was the son of KCS Paniker, considered as a leading figure in the Madras Art Movement and a founding member of Cholamandal Artists’ village.
Born in 1946 in Bengaluru, he was one of the earliest artists to move into Cholamandal Artists Village. Painter, metal worker and ceramicist turned into a sculptor, Nandagopal is a recipient of National Award of Lalit Kala Academy and Jindal Stainless Steel award for sculpture.
He was also honoured with Senior Fellowship by the Government of India and nominated as an advisor to the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi.
