CHENNAI: Expressing doubts over a hidden agenda purportedly behind providing constitutional status to the Backward Class Commission, DMK MP TKS Elangovan on Wednesday cautioned against snatching away the authority of States in fixing the list of Other Backward Classes (OBC).

“There is a hidden agenda in all the legislation this government brings in. I doubt such one in the Amendment to give constitutional status to Backward Class Commission,” he said in Rajya Sabha.

Asserting that the powers to determine who should be classified as backward class must be vested with the Sates, he stated only the Sates could fix the list of backward classes and not the Centre.
It may be noted that the bill paves way for according constitutional status to the BC Commission, making Parliament the final authority in including communities in the OBC list.
