VELLORE: The joy of a prison inmate who escaped from a high-security prison here was short-lived as police nabbed him within hours of his giving the slip to prison authorities by scaling a 15 feet wall using a dhoti.

The remand prisoner, identified as Sahadevan, allegedly scaled a 15 feet-wall of the Vellore Central Prison for men this morning, a senior prisons official said.

He was reportedly found missing during the morning roll call, prompting officials to launch an inspection.

Officials said the prisoner allegedly scaled the wall using a dhoti.

He also used some wooden planks lying there to climb the wall, they said, adding a manhunt was later launched to nab him.

A police team subsequently arrested him from Bargur in Krishnagiri district later in the day, he said.

Sahadevan was lodged in the high security prison in connection with the murder of a woman.

The prison houses, among others, two of the convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, Murugan and Santhan.

The other convict, AG Perarivalan, has been shifted to Puzhal prison here to receive medical treatment at a city govrnment hospital.
