CHENNAI: At the end of the weeklong protests against the ban on jallikattu, what remain behind are 413 tonnes of garbage at the Marina, according to corporation officials.
As many as 1,473 sanitary workers were at work in day and night shifts, cleaning up the promenade and the beach after the protests. Although some students tried to clean up some of the garbage during the protest, it was hardly enough considering the sheer number of people who turned up to witness or take an active part in the protest.
However, other than the waste, the damages to the promenade and its surroundings were minimal, the officials said. “There are no significant damages caused by the protests. Some railings bordering the pavement have been bent but it would not take much to have them fixed or replaced.”
