CHENNAI: Reserving 50 per cent seats under government quota for in-service candidates in PG medical admission would directly impinge MCI’s mandate to maintain standards, its senior counsel Vijay Narayan told the Madras High Court, on Friday.

When arguments on a batch of appeals relating to award of incentive marks for in-service doctors working in PHCs in rural areas resumed, the counsel told Justice M Sathyanarayanan that the incentive scheme for government doctors for PG medical admissions was  alright and it had been upheld by the Supreme Court. But not reservation of seats, he argued.
The cases have been referred to Justice Sathyanarayanan, after a special bench of two judges – Justice K K Sasidharan and Justice S M Subramaniam – delivered a split verdict on May 3.
Narayan told the judge that linking incentive marks with NEET-PG marks obtained by the candidate concerned was a must. Otherwise, each State will come out with its own incentives, ranging from one mark to 10 marks. That would affect the standardisation bid of MCI, he said.
Once the MCI has decided that it will give 10 per cent of marks linked to a candidate’s NEET-PG score, that is the last word. No State could have norms different to that, he added.
Justice Sathyanarayanan reserved orders for Saturday.
