CHENNAI: The State Forest department has arrested three poachers who hunted protected water birds in Kancheepuram district. This followed a report published by Express on September 23.

The report titled, “Not chicken, eateries in Chennai’s outskirts may be serving protected waterbirds,” revealed that large water birds found in protected sanctuaries such as Vedanthangal and nearby Karikili, were missing near farms.

P Moorthy (45), A Appadurai (60) and S Ellappan (27) were arrested on November 5. “After learning that hunting was happening in these water bodies, we started patrolling them. We found these three on the banks of Veliyur lake,” said Sachin Bhosale, District Forest Officer. “We insist that public inform the forest department if they notice poachers. We will take swift action,” he said.
