VELLORE: Following the suicide of four girl students in Ramapuram on Friday, after they were allegedly castigated by teachers for their poor academic performance, the headmaster and the class teacher of the school, where the girls studied, were suspended on Saturday.

The parents of the deceased girls alleged that their children ended lives only because of the castigation by teachers. They demanded the immediate arrest of the persons behind the incident.

Talking to mediapersons, Chief Education Officer Marx said, “The school headmaster Ramamani and class teacher Meenakshi have been temporarily suspended. We are yet to find out the motive behind the  suicide. We will inquire with all the students on Monday to get a clear picture of the incident.”

Meanwhile, District Collector S A Raman said that they have put forward a request seeking financial assistance to the victims’ families from the chief minister’s fund. He added that the police have started an investigation to dig out the truth behind the incident and would take necessary action against those who are found guilty.

Members of the Students Federation of India (SFI) demanded that the government should establish counselling centres in government schools. They also demanded the government to offer solatium to the victims’ families.

“We are going to start the routine work of sensitising students and creating awareness among them through various workshops and events,” said P Pagalavan, Superintendent of Police, Vellore district.

After autopsy the bodies were taken to burial ground from Adukamparai GH at around 1.00 pm. A team of police personnel under deputy superintendents of police escorted the ambulance to the burial ground.
