An MDMK functionary who attempted suicide by setting himself on fire ahead of the commencement of Vaiko’s rally against Neutrino project died in a private hospital on Monday.

MADURAI: An MDMK functionary who attempted suicide by setting himself on fire ahead of the commencement of Vaiko’s rally against Neutrino project died in a private hospital on Monday. On Saturday, a meeting was organised at Palanganatham here before Vaiko started his 10-day rally against the Neutrino project to Cumbum in Theni district.

When the meeting was about to end, A Ravi (50), a resident of Sivakasi taluk in Virudhunagar, set himself ablaze.  Sources said Ravi had sustained more than 90 per cent burns. After his death on Monday, Ravi’s body was shifted to the Government Rajaji Hospital for postmortem. Around 10.30 am on Monday, Vaiko came to the GRH mortuary and paid his last respects to Ravi.
