Tamil Nadu received more funds under NDA regime: PM Narendra Modi

CHENNAI: Apparently seeking to clarify the opposition charge that the Central government was not favourable to Tamil Nadu on many key aspects, Prime Mi­nister Narendra Modi on Sa­turday said a whopping Rs 24,000 crore worth Central projects were being impleme­nted in the State alone. He also compared the situation betw­e­e­n the previous UPA regime and the present NDA governm­ent and said Tamil Nadu benefitted much better during the current regime.

Using the occasion to launch the Amma Two-Wheeler Sch­e­m­e of the State government, to mark the 70th birth anniversary of the late former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa at Kalaivanar Ar­angam here, he detailed the Central schemes under which Tamil Nadu had benefited sig­nificantly.“More than Rs 24,000 crore worth of projects are currently being implemented by the Centre in Tamil Nadu. All th­e­s­e projects have begun after the NDA government assumed office. They include solar power plants, crude oil pipelines,  National Highways  and port-related works. More than Rs 3,700 crore has been sanctioned for the Chennai Metro Rail,” the PM pointed out.

Modi also underscored that during the UPA regi­me, Tamil Nadu received Rs 81,000 crore  under the 13th Finance Co­m­m­ission. “Howe­ver, after the NDA came to po­w­er, Tamil Nadu now received Rs 1.80 lakh crore under the 14th Finance Commission. This is an increase of about 120  per cent,” he added.

Stating that the Centre was working to provide a home to every poor family by 2022, the PM said about one crore houses had been built in the last three years. “Tamil Nadu has been given about Rs 700 crore in 2016-17, and about Rs 200 crore in 2017-18, for rural housing. For urban housing,  the State had been given over Rs 6,000 crore.Under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, farmers in Tamil Nadu got a compensation for crop loss to the tune of over Rs 2,600 crore.
