CHENNAI: The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has ranked Chennai 37th out of a list of 98 Smart cities.  Coimbatore, Vellore and Salem have beaten Chennai by securing 14th, 32nd and 35th ranks respectively.

Chennai scored a meagre 31.46 points in comparison to Nagpur which scored 259.96 to bag the top spot.
The Greater Chennai Corporation which is implementing a major chunk of Smart City Mission projects has completed just two projects in the last few years - Namma Chennai App and 28 smart classes. However, various projects such as a pedestrian plaza at T Nagar, multi-level parking systems, rejuvenation of water bodies in the metropolitan area are underway.

Taking stock of the below par rating, Deputy Commissioner (works) Govinda Rao said projects would be expedited and many projects are in the execution stage.
