CHENNAI/MADURAI: The Centre has picked Madurai over Thanjavur as the location for the new All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), according to a communication from the Union Health Ministry to the State government, accessed by Express on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare approved the establishment of the new AIIMS at the site suggested by TN at Thoppur in Madurai district subject to a few conditions. The State should provide four-lane connectivity from the National Highway to the site apart from ensuring 20MVA of power supply from two different feeders in addition to adequate water supply.

It should hand over land free of encumbrances/encroachments and make sure there is shifting of Low Tension transformer L/T lines. Lastly, an agreement is to be made with Indian Oil Corporation Limited before finalising construction plans.

TN had proposed five sites to set up an AIIMS. Aside from Thoppur, Sengipatti (Thanjavur), Pudukottai town, Chengalpattu (Kancheepuram) and Perundurai (Erode) were considered. At a public meet in Melur, on Tuesday, Revenue Minister RB Udhayakumar, announced the Centre’s decision.
