Four die in separate wall collapse incidents across TN due to heavy rain

Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister M R K Panneerselvam visited one of the affected families in Cuddalore and provided financial assistance for the funeral.

CUDDALORE/VILLUPURAM/KALLAKURICHI: A woman and her daughter died after a wall of their house collapsed near Puduchathiram in Chidambaram taluk of Cuddalore district early on Wednesday.

According to police, heavy rain has been lashing Cuddalore district for the past four days. In the early hours of Wednesday, M Yasothai (69) and her daughter M Jaya (40) of Kamarajar Street in Andarmullipallam village near Puduchathiram were sleeping in their tiled house when one of the walls collapsed due to continuous rain.

“Yasothai died on the spot, and her daughter Jaya died while being taken to the Puduchattaram Primary Health Centre,” a police source said.

The bodies were later sent to the Parangipettai Government Hospital for postmortem examination.

Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister M R K Panneerselvam visited the spot, met the family members and provided financial assistance for the funeral.

The Puduchathiram police have registered a case and further probe is under way.

Similarly, in Marakanam, Villupuram district, A Pachiammal (65) of Alathur died when a wall collapsed on her while she was cooking on Wednesday morning. “She was trapped under the debris and died on the spot,” said a police official. Her body was sent to a private medical college hospital in Ganapathychettykulam, Puducherry, for autopsy.

In another incident in Kongarapalayam near Kallakurichi, Vanamayili (60) died after a wall of her house collapsed on Wednesday morning.
