HYDERABAD: The National Backward Classes Welfare Association has demanded that the central government provide 50 per cent political reservation for BCs in Assembly and parliamentary elections.

The association has organised a week-long programme in Delhi and later met prime minister Narendra Modi and national leaders LK Advani, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Sharad Yadav and others.

In their memorandum to the leaders, association president R Krishnaiah has said reservation to BCs in legislative bodies is a democratic and constitutional right, and depriving them of it amounts to violation of human rights. Eighteen of the 29 states have not elected a single BC MP, he has noted.

Krishnaiah also demanded that reservation must be provided in promotions to BC employees. The Mandal Commission and Nachiappan Committee also recommended reservation to BC employees in promotions, he recalled.

Krishnaiah urged the Centre to create a separate ministerial department for BCs and to categorise BCs into A, B, C, D, E and F groups as in the case of AP.
