AP Moves CWC against Telangana Projects

Express News Service

HYDERABAD:  The AP government on Friday requested the Central Water Commission (CWC) chairman to advise the Telangana government to place detailed project reports (DPRs) of the Palamuru-Rangareddy and Nakkalagandi Lift Irrigation Schemes before the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB), CWC and the Apex Council for scrutiny and approval.

AP officials faxed a letter to the CWC, proposing a meeting of the KRMB to decide water releases for the Kharif crop. In the letter, AP told the CWC chairman that “unilaterally proceeding with the construction of any new project on river Krishna pending adjudication of the references by KWDT-2 without the approval of the Krishna River Management Board and the Apex Council as per section 84(3)(ii) and 85(8)(d) of the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014 will tantamount to violation of principles laid down in the Act”.

The officials informed the CWC that TS had proposed two LI schemes - PalamuruLIS by drawing a quantum of 90 tmc and Nakkalagandi LIS to draw water from the foreshore of Srisailam reservoir, out of surplus waters of river Krishna.

“The AP Reorganisation Act stipulates that planning of new projects has to be appraised and recommended by the KRMB and by the CWC and thereafter, it requires the sanction by the Apex Council,” the officials said.
