HYDERABAD: Sending out a strong message, deputy chief minister (Education) Kadiyam Srihari on Sunday said that political activities, meetings and rallies should not be allowed in universities and that universities should be centres for excellence in academics and research.
It may be recalled that OU had recently issued a notice prohibiting activities and meetings unrelated to academics. The education minister, who was speaking at a conference with V-Cs of all universities in TS, also instructed the V-Cs to ensure that universities and colleges are drugs and ragging free and to instal CCTVs in the university campuses to keep a tab on illegal activities.
Coming on the heels of Osmania University cutting down power and water supply to five hostels on Saturday in order to flush out illegal hostel dwellers, Srihari said non-boarders cannot be allowed to stay in hostels as it affects allotment of hostels to new students.
Srihari said that CM has taken a decision to fill a total of 1,550 posts in all state universities and in first phase 1,061 of these posts will be filled. He said that a committee headed by former OU VC Prof Tirupati Rao will look into the issues related to academic faculty working on contract basis in government universities and final report on it will be out in a few weeks.
