HYDERABAD: A division bench of the High Court on Thursday directed the Telangana government to explain by Monday whether 1,800 government schools across the state were left without a single teacher and were closed even after the recent transfers of teachers. It also wanted the government to explain the status of children studying in the said schools.

The bench, comprising chief justice TBN Radhakrishnan and justice V Ramasubramanian passed this order on a PIL filed by R Venkat Reddy, convenor of MV Foundation, seeking a direction to AP and Telangana governments to initiate concrete steps for improving the learning standards for children studying in government and aided schools.

Petitioner’s counsel NS Arjun Kumar said there was an alarming fall in the learning outcomes of children studying in government schools as per the All India National Achievement Survey, 2017 and the state-level RMSA survey.

The petitioner’s counsel said the governments of AP and Telangana were very apathetic to government schools. In Telangana, about 1,800 government schools were left without a single teacher and were closed down even after the recent teacher transfers. The bench then directed the government counsel to submit full details on the issues raised by the petitioner.
