LUCKNOW: The Varanasi police have arrested a student leader of the Samajwadi Party for assaulting a student of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and using caste-based slurs and death threats.

Prashant Mishra, a second-year MA Hindi student at BHU, alleged in his complaint that the Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha (the student wing of the Samajwadi Party) office-bearer Himanshu Yadav, thrashed him inside the classroom after asking his caste.

Prashant Mishra submitted the complaint to the proctorial board of the university, the chief security officer of the campus and the Lanka police station. Acting on the complaint, the local police registered an FIR against the accused.

Mishra stated in his complaint that on Wednesday, around 11.45 am, Himanshu Yadav, the unit president of Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha, asked his name, caste, and course when Mishra arrived in the department for class.

Mishra said that after saying about himself, he asked Yadav the same questions but Yadav reportedly became agitated and annoyed.

As per the complaint, an enraged Himanshu Yadav publicly abused and slapped Prashant using caste-based derogatory terms while threatening to kill him. This entire incident was recorded in the CCTV cameras installed in the department.

After receiving the complaint letter from the student, the Proctorial Department forwarded it to the Lanka Police Station. Based on Mishra's complaint, the police have registered a case against Himanshu Yadav under sections 115(2), 352, 351(3) of Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita (BNS) and arrested him.

Meanwhile, the victim has requested the Proctorial Department to provide him protection against ragging and justice so that such an incident does not happen to him again.
