A 32-year-old woman was found hanging at her in-laws’ house in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district on Sunday, police said.

The deceased, identified as Riya Pal, was found hanging at her home in the Ashoknagar area. Police detained her husband, Manas Das, and mother-in-law for questioning.

As police took the two to the station, local residents and BJP workers gathered, demanding stringent action against those responsible for the woman’s death.

Local residents alleged that they were protesting peacefully, demanding action against those responsible for the woman's death, when police suddenly resorted to lathi-charge.

Police said an investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding Riya’s death and whether it was a case of suicide or involved any other factor.
