HYDERABAD: Central Information Commissioner (CIC) M Sridhar Acharyulu on Saturday said that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), once introduced, would put an end to injustices being done to the women folk in the country.
Addressing a gathering at a national seminar on “Uniform Civil Code - Issues and challenges” organised in connection with the silver jubilee celebrations of KV Ranga Reddy law college here, Sridhar said that the main objective of the UCC was to herald a just society, fair polity and a family with equal rights to women of the society.
He said when Hindu code bill was introduced there was resistance from the Hindu MPs and Dr BR Ambedkar successfully convinced them about the need to introduce the Hindu code by citing the existence of divorce system among 90 per cent of Hindu sects, and thereby made the MPs see reason and the need to codify laws.
In Islam, there are conditions under which a man can divorce his wife. Men cannot divorce their wives unilaterally. He also opposed polygamy, which is practised by some Muslim men.
Referring to incidents like “triple talaq through WhatsApp message”, Professor Sridhar said that they are unlawful and un-Islamic as well. If women are given equal property rights, then the menace of dowry would disappear, he said.
