'Overall Uplift of Tribal Population Tops Agenda'

The four-time MP from Odisha’s tribal-dominated Sundargarh district was the first Union Minister of Tribal Affairs when the ministry was formed in 1999 under the first NDA regime.

Your goal.

Overall development of the tribal population and bringing them to social mainstream will top the agenda of my ministry.

On the thrust areas.

Building infrastructure and improving the standards of education as well as healthcare services in tribal areas. More special central assistance will be given in the tribal sub-plan for road communication, electricity and irrigation for speedy economic development.

Tackling low literacy levels and unemployment in tribal pockets.

The literacy divide between the Scheduled Tribes and the general population is alarming at 30 percent and is found to be widening. The challenge is to bridge the gap. Emphasis will be given to open more model schools and residential schools in the scheduled areas. Similarly, self-employment of tribal people through a three-pronged approach—short-term, medium-term and long-term strategies—will be taken up. There is an urgent need to strengthen institutions like Integrated Tribal Development Agencies, Tribal Research Institutions and other agencies for promoting sustainable development.

On displacement of tribals for mining and industrial projects.

We will focus on striking a balance between environment and development.

On things that have changed for the first tribal affairs minister of India.

My previous stint in the ministry will help me understand the problems and issues of tribals.
