New Push for Clean India Drive

With the government mulling on taking up cleanliness drives on special days like, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan will receive a shot.

NEW DELHI: So, all the special days are set become clean days! With the government mulling an initiative to take up cleanliness drives on days like Heritage Day, Environment Day, Friendship Day or Christmas, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan will receive a shot in the arm.

All this while, the cleanliness drive by ministries were limited to weeding out files and cleaning offices, but with the cabinet secretariat’s new directive, things are set to change. Cabinet Secretary P K Sinha has written to secretaries of all major ministries, listing about two dozen themes and an indicative list of activities related to the drive, which the ministries need to follow.

Activities include citizens putting ‘friendship bands’ on municipal workers serving in their locality, and urban local bodies distributing masts and safety kits to all municipal workers on World Friendship Day (July 30). This should be done by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Clean-up drives, art and painting drives by local artistes on the walls of the public toilets should be done on the World Toilet Day on November 19.

The Ministry of Tourism has been asked to start cleanliness drives during Durga Puja and Diwali.
